mp3 players / loudspeakers / vases / boards

The loudspeakers in the vases emit barely audible sinusoidal sounds, the pitch or frequency of which rises continuously from 0 to 500Hz and then falls back to 0. Depending on the shape, each vase vibrates particularly well at a different, unpredictable resonance frequency. This causes the sound to get louder. The frequencies change at different speeds in the vases - that's why the tones are always superimposed differently to form a complex soundscape.
